We’re excited to release the first version of our Mobile Wireframe Kits. Over the past two years we’ve worked on countless mobile experience design products and realized early on that we needed to create some baseline templates to help us be more efficient when transitioning from sketching to wireframes. While there are some great resources out there, we found that we needed something barebones; real wireframes, so that our clients could focus on interaction and not get too caught up on design details before starting visual design.

So we created our own mobile wireframe kits and have been putting them to use on every project. Over the last year we saved so much time, energy, and money that we decided to release them as a product. What makes ours unique is that they are true wireframe-ready elements sans any aesthetic or design. We’ve also included professional wireframe presentation boards so you can immediately start creating high-fidelity, annotated, and presentation ready wireframe deliverables for your projects.

Here at 39Argyle we love Gowalla. Just like Gowalla, the 39Argyle team includes 3 native Texans, and we’ve been passionate dedicated users from day 1. After using the Gowalla iPhone application for so long, we decided to explore what their user experiences looked like on other major market devices. We were able to find the Android application and the Blackberry version, designed by Mutual Mobile, but no word of an upcoming WP7 release. It makes sense that the majority of the focus and innovation from Gowalla has taken place on the iPhone, especially with the large number of early adopters and a user base that resides in various design and development spaces. At the same time you cannot ignore what the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 will achieve in the upcoming years.

At the time, we already possessed an early expertise in designing for Windows Phone 7 and because we knew companies like Flickr and Foursquare were already creating amazingly beautiful Windows Phone products, we decided to reach out to the Gowalla team about the prospect of crafting their Windows Phone application. A project was never created between our two companies, but we decided to design a quick concept for a Gowalla Windows Phone 7 app to satiate our own desires to illustrate the brand on the platform.Working with my wife, Natalie, we whipped these out in about 3 hours just for kicks.

There are so many untapped opportunities for companies to extend their brands and products to and to reach out to a whole new segment of users on WP7. We’ll be on the lookout for the Gowalla Windows Phone 7 application and suggest you do too.

Here at 39Argyle, we’re all process. The first part of the process for us (after discovery) is sketching. We typically start by creating very quick, high-level sketches then iterate and refine them as we start to make decisions. The goal by doing this exercise is to rapidly get all the crazy ideas about how something could potentially work drawn on paper so that we can not only share the ideas with the rest of the team, but also see for ourselves how it feels once it’s out of our head and sitting in front of us.

Once you’ve nailed down the way you think the interaction design should work, you may be inclined to jump right in to Keynote, Omnigraffle or another program to create high-fidelity wireframes. Sometimes, that’s the perfect next step. However, we would argue that, depending on the complexity of the project, you may want to consider doing high-fidelity sketches. “Screw that! That would take forever!…”, you might say. Well sure… it does take a little longer, but consider how much thought you’re going to be putting into your project if you have to draw every UI element by hand. You’re practically forced to continually reassess the experience you’re creating. That’s when fresh alternative ideas could start flooding into your head. And hey… if nothing else, it can help you gain a better understanding of the project and validate your current approach.
